In addition to moose, hare, grouse and ptarmigan, at least 11 species of waterfowl are found in the region including black duck, common merganser, Canada goose, ring-necked duck and common goldeneye.
Non-Aboriginals are not permitted to trap in the territory covered by the James Bay and Northern Québec Agreement. Snaring hare is also prohibited.
The following species are reserved for Aboriginals: weasel, wolverine, beaver, ermine, wolf, otter, lynx, groundhog, marten, striped skunk, bear, fisher, porcupine, muskrat, fox and mink.
CONDITIONS:
Hunters must obtain a sport hunting licence from the Government of Québec, but do not require a pass to hunt in the Eastmain and Weh-Sees Indohoun sectors.
Those interested in hunting on Category I or II lands must obtain permission from the Nemaska Band Council (819 673-2512) or the Waskaganish Band Council (819 895-8901).
Moose
Moose sport hunting is prohibited in the Eastmain sector. However, it is authorized in the Weh-Sees Indohoun sector, subject to the following:
- Hunting bulls and calves is permitted
- The bow hunting pre-season has been abolished, but bow hunting is still permitted during the firearm hunting season
- The firearm hunting season in this sector is now shorter than in the rest of zone 22.
Caribou
Caribou sport hunting is prohibited in the Eastmain and Weh-Sees Indohoun sectors, in accordance with the regulations in effect for zone 22.
